The MVRHS varsity football team played its first game of the year at White Stadium, Jamaica Plain, versus Brighton and won, 8-0.
The Islanders received the opening kickoff and began play from scrimmage on their own 30-yard line. Runs by Randall Jette, Brian Montambault and Michael Araujo, plus a facemask penalty on Brighton, moved the ball to the Bengals’ five-yard line in nine plays. From there Jette faked a handoff and ran into the end zone untouched.
The Islanders lined up for an extra point kick but it was a ruse. Instead, Chris Costello passed to Delmont Araujo for two points.
As far as scoring goes, that was it. The teams pushed each other up and down the field without changing the scoreboard. Brighton shot itself in the foot several times with untimely penalties, but the Vineyard could not turn their errors into points.
The Islanders invade Sharon today, Thursday. Last week Sharon beat Randolph, 22-15.
