Menemsha is slowly beginning to close its doors. First we said “see you next year” to the Home Port. Now, we have said our farewells to the jalapeñ;o poppers, Bite fries, fish sandwiches, and Karen, Jackie, and Michael Flynn at The Bite. Kara at Pandora’s Box, the Olivers at Menemsha Market, and Bob at Menemsha Blues have all hung their sale signs. The Café has dropped back to 7 am to 3 pm daily, the Galley is still happily dishing out soft serve, Menemsha and Larsen’s Fish Markets are both still welcoming customers for a while longer. Jane Slater is behind the desk at Over South and Roberta Morgan is at Harbor Craft, happily chatting with customers and passersby. Beetlebung Dry Goods still has its doors open. And, my gang will be at the Texaco for the duration.

Scott McDowell seemed to be overlooked in last week’s article discussing fish art. Scott has been creating his copper fish for years. Many of us are lucky enough to have them hanging in our homes. Each one is diligently crafted by this well-known artisan and charter captain. He has branched out over the years by creating mermaids, squid, skates, hermit crabs and more. He makes things from simple wall hangings to more intricate sconces and chandeliers. Visit him and peruse his showroom at 22 Basin Road or online at www.the-copperworks.com.

The Chilmark School Parent Teacher Organization is a collection of dedicated parents and educators. The Outing Program, although a separate entity, works closely with the PTO and will hold its first monthly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 6 pm. We are lucky enough to have a school that believes in project-based learning, where our children, along with their teachers and community members, all become active participants in their education. The Outing Program uniquely dovetails with this philosophy as it continues into its 19th year with the vision that “learning has no limits.” This year’s officers are Katie Carroll, Chairman; Jenny Christy, Treasurer; Lindsey Scott, Secretary; Hillary Noyes-Keene, Outing Program Coordinator; and Kerry Taylor, Financial Advisor.

Lucky Irene at the library will have the opportunity to spend her Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 4 pm with any child from age six through fifth grade interested in her after-school art program. October 6 is the first get together. They will read for the first half and do book-related crafts for the second half. She is looking to gather cloth scraps for some fall projects. Please drop off anything you might be willing to donate to the library.

Cris and Lesley Neumann, along with their three boys Evan, Corin, and Auden, have been in town for the last two weeks visiting family that includes Cris’ parents Jane and Conrad. They departed Monday for their long journey home to a spot just outside Dublin.

M.V. Youth Soccer is back in full swing at the West Tisbury School. Jakie, Ella, Declan, El, Wren, Oisin, Bryce, Brayden, Axel, Kestutis, Elliot, Brooks, Bella, Graham, Silas, Tristan, Kiera, Imogen, Dash, Ben, Adam, and Thea are all members of these years’ Mini-kickers, Under-8 and Under-10 divisions. Games start at 9 am for the youngest bunch every Saturday morning.

We all know Carl and Sherry Flanders of Larsen Lane. We all know how young they both look. With that said, it is hard to believe that on August 11 they became grandparents to Scarlett Lee Flanders, born to Carl Jr. and Rebecca of Salisbury, Maryland.

The youngest member of the Flanders family weighed in at 6 pounds, 6 ounces. Sherry had the pleasure of spending some quality time with her this summer and plans a trip back to see the petite beauty in October.

Susan and Lynn Murphy have had the pleasure of grandson TJ’s company while parents Lucas and Tricia were at Rausch Creek Off-road Park in Pennsylvania, where Lucas and his teammate placed second in their rock crawler event.

Hope, Chris, Finnegan, and Linden MacLeod welcome Pogo the pug to their family.

Everett Poole is back behind the steering wheel, getting out and about a bit after his back surgery.

Looking for a yummy snack? Think popcorn. Barrett and Solon Oliver are happy to meet up with you to take your order. Seventy percent of their popcorn sales go directly towards supporting local Cub Scouting. This money is used to make events like the Chuckwagon Derby and the Wicked Cool Autumn Welcome possible. Please call the boys at 508-645-2730 to discuss details.

Looking for a yummy dinner? Think pizza. The Chilmark Church is back at it on Tuesday nights from 6 to about 7:30 pm, serving up pizza and assorted goodies shared in a potluck style. The no-frills evening is loved by all who attend. Please join the likes of the Flanders, Weidner/Ruimermans, Maidas, Hungerfords, Goffs, Carrolls, Mayhews and more for a family friendly evening full of conversation and of course Bananagrams. Call Julie Flanders at 508-645-3723 with questions.

Happy 39th to my dear sweet brother-in-law Chris Carroll.
