The second round of interscholastic junior high track meets was held Friday at the high school oval. The Edgartown vs. West Tisbury boys meet was close. The up-Island Hawks pulled off the 36-32 win by sweeping the mile and winning the 4×100 m relay, the final two events of the meet. Until then the Eagles were flying higher than the Hawks, 32-21.
The W.T. milers: Ben Poole, 5:53; Silas Berlin, 5:54, and Lee Faraca, 6:15.
Edgartown’s Dorian Johnson was a triple winner in the shot put, 28’4″, discus 92’1″ and hurdles, 12.08.
Tim Roberts earned points in three events for Westiz. He won at 200 m, was second with the shot, and took third in the discus. Up-Islander Matt Stone won the long jump, and was second over the hurdles and in the 100 m sprint.
The girls meet
The West Tisbury girls won six of the eight events, sweeping the mile and the long jump. The milers: Julia Neville, 6:51; Whitney Schroeder, 6:56; Pearl Vercruysse. The WT Jumpers were Lucy Hackney, Julia Neville, Livy Smith. Lucy also was second with the discus and third in the hurdles. Livy also took second in the dash. Emily Turney won the shot put (25’2″) and discus, (71’9″). Livy Smith also was second in the 100 m and was first over the hurdles.
Edgartown’s Aubrey Ashmun won the 100 m dash and was third with the discus.

Oak Bluffs vs., Tisbury
Both schools were short-handed as their sixth graders were off Island on school trips.
O.B. won the girls meet, 40-19. They won every event except the hurdles and the relay. Emily DeBettencourt was more than a triple threat claiming wins in the discus, long jump, 200 m and mile. (She ran the mile unopposed in 8:14.) Bailey Moreis won the shot put, 100 m dash, and was second in the long jump. Heidi White took second in the shot and discus and third in the dash.
Point winners for Tisbury were Casey McAndrews (third at the discus and long jump, second in the 200 m). Elise DeCosta won the hurdles unopposed. Laela Veccia-Zeitz was third In the 200 m. Celena Guimaraes was second in the 100 m dash.
The boys meet
Patryck Nascimento was a triple winner for Tisbury taking the shot put with a heave of 30’10”, the discus at 70’8″ and the hurdles in 13:22. Alex GordonBeck matched Nascimento’s efforts for Oak Bluffs. He was second at the shot, won the long jump, the 200 m and the hurdles. Dave DeOliveira won the mile (6:06.8) and was third in the jump, second in the 100 m dash for O.B. Grant Santos was second in the hurdles, third in the dash for Tisbury. Sergey Bernier was second in the jump, third with the shot and third in the dash for Tisbury
The relay was not run
Final count: Oak Bluffs 36, Tisbury 25.
Next Friday is the quadrilateral meet, the winner of which will claim the Island track and field championship.
