On Friday, Oct. 15, the Chilmark School walked over to the Chilmark Community Center to enjoy our first Community Lunch. Local chefs volunteered to prepare meals for our 53 students, and 10 adults, including teachers and parent volunteers. Jan Buhrman and Robert Lionette of Kitchen Porch Catering prepared the meal with ingredients purchased from local farms, including meatloaf from Pasture Hill, corn and apples from Morning Glory, and greens and yams from Mermaid Farm. The lunch was made possible by the Chilmark School PTO, Island Grown Schools, Slow Food MV and the Kitchen Porch.
After eating and cleaning up, students walked back to school to participate in learning centers set up by Island Grown Initiative Staff. They learned about bees at the bee observation table, wrote thank-you notes at the writing station, worked in the garden, and pressed apple cider.
