The Jack-o’-Lanterns are out on the stoop, and town is filled with scarecrows. It could only mean one thing: BOO! It’s Halloween, and there are plenty of events on the docket to get you in the spirit without leaving Edgartown.

For the family, The FARM Institute will host a Halloween Fest Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 am to 12 noon. The event will include a costume contest, pumpkin carving, hayrides, cornhusk doll-making, face-painting, and more. For further info, call 508-627-7007.

The Martha’s Vineyard Ecumenical Youth Group will be hosting an evening of Safe Trick-or-Treating and Halloween Games on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7 pm at The Federated Church, 45 South Summer Street in Edgartown. All costumed trick-or-treaters, young and old, and even canine, are welcome to stop by. For more information, please call 508-627-4421.

The Edgartown School PTO will hold their annual Halloween party October 31, from 4 to 6 pm in the gym. It’s a great way for the kids to see each other’s costumes with Halloween falling on a Sunday.

For the grown-ups, Atlantic Fish & Chop House will hold a Halloween party with music by the Sultans of Swing, tomorrow, October 29, from 9 pm to closing. Fun will include a cash prize for best Halloween costume, so get those creative juices flowing.

Also on Friday night, the Wharf is offering “Scaryoke,” including costume and karaoke prizes. So whether you’re dressed as Prince or Madonna, Snooki or Sarah Palin, get in there and sing your heart out. The fun starts at 10 pm.

As Halloween would be incomplete without the always-entertaining spectacle that is the Boogies, Nectar’s will hold its annual Halloween Disco Party Sunday, October 31, starting at 9:30 pm.

And if all that doesn’t have you Halloweened out, Vineyard Ghost Walking Tours take place each Tuesday. Tours meet at 8 pm in Mini Park, next to Edgartown Books. For more info, call 774-563-0762.

In less spooky news, Johnny Mayhew, who taught math at the MVRHS from 1959-1986, is turning 90 on November 2. Johnny’s family will hold an open house birthday party for him in the downstairs dining room of Windemere on October 31 from 2 to 4 pm. Friends and former students are encouraged to stop in to wish him a Happy Birthday and share a glass of wine and piece of birthday cake — no costumes necessary.

The Edgartown Community Suppers are back again on Mondays at 5 pm in the Baylies Room of the Old Whaling Church. Suppers run through March 28.

All are welcome. Event sponsors include the United Methodist Church of M.V. and the Rotary Club. For more information, call 508-693-4424.

The MVRHS Class of 1970 held their 40th reunion Saturday, Oct. 16, at Farm Neck Golf Club. Edgartown was well represented, both by past Eagles and current residents, including, David Berube, Pam Dolby, Kenny Ivory, Barbara Phillips, Debby Duarte Rogers, Wendy White Stone (who flew in from Alabama), Greg Warcut, and Philip Westover. Everyone had such a good time that they plan to collaborate with the Class of 1969 for a follow-up event to take place sometime next year.

Felix Neck invites everyone to help put the butterfly garden to bed for the winter by making wreaths to be used at the Fall Festival (the day after Thanksgiving). All ages are welcome, Thursdays through November 18, 10 am-3 pm.

Don’t forget about the All-Island Seasonal Flu Clinic on November 11, from 8 am 12 noon. I know I’ve already mentioned this, but if you’re anything like me, you could use the reminder. For more information on this and upcoming flu clinics, call 508-687-7158 or contact the Board of Health office.

I’m sad that I won’t be around to hand out Halloween candy, now that I’m living downtown where I’m promised trick-or-treaters, but I will be attending my first Patriots game this Sunday with my mom and husband. Let’s hope for a win so that I get invited back. For those of you who will be hitting the streets in search of an abundance of tiny candy bars and sugary treats, have fun, be safe, and don’t forget to brush your teeth.
