Applications for the Red Stocking will be available starting Monday, Nov. 1, for Island children and their families. The Red Stocking Fund provides food, toys, and clothing to children, from infants to eighth graders. Last year, Red Stocking provided gifts for more than 375 children on the Island.
Parents should apply early, preferably by November 15, in order to receive food certificates for Thanksgiving.
Applications are available at banks, elementary schools, Martha’s Vineyard Insurance Co. in Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Early Childhood Office, the Tribal Headquarters in Aquinnah, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Island Food Pantry in Vineyard Haven. Portuguese-speaking families may get applications and translation assistance at the Vineyard Health Care Access Program office.
On Sunday, Nov. 14, the Martha’s Vineyard Harley Riders will conduct their round-the-Island ride to collect toys and donations, which provides about one-third of Red Stocking’s annual budget. The public is invited to welcome the Harley Riders at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs at 12 noon.
Gift-wrapping takes place on December 13-15 at Grace Church in Vineyard Haven. To volunteer, call Patricia Carlet at 508-693-3187.
Donations by check may be mailed to Red Stocking Fund treasurer Barbara Silvia at 67 Midland Ave., Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
