The Vineyard Haven Library will be open Sunday afternoons all winter beginning this Sunday. Celebrate at the Halloween open house which runs from noon to 4 pm with cider, cookies, and Halloween treats. Children five and up should come in costume and enjoy a drop-in crafts program. Kids can enter a drawing for prizes for all ages.

Next Tuesday ages 6 and up will enjoy a movie and popcorn at 1 pm at the library. The story is about a boy who moves to China and learns karate from a master (rated PG). Then on Wednesday ages 8 to 11 will enjoy Wii Games from 3 to 5 pm. Ages 5 and up will do pirate crafts at 3:30 on Thursday with Kathy Forrester. Little ones will enjoy the pirate stories with Kathy the next week.

Tuesday evening the library will serve lemonade and popcorn while music fills the air. The movie is “DeLovely, the Story of Cole Porter and His Music.” The musical features many first-class musicians and offers a worldly sophistication that is rare in today’s movies. The film starts at 7 pm. That is just to whet your appetite for an evening of Ballads from Broadway with vocalist Stephanie Miele. She will perform Wednesday at 7 pm upstairs in the main room. A reception follows the concert where Stephanie will be accompanied by Alice Carey on piano and Jim Wall on bass.

The Chilmark Women’s Symposium, called Making Memories, is this Saturday. Arlan Wise invites all Island women for the free event at 9 am. Donations are welcome to help cover expenses.

Shirley Mayhew suggests some of John Mayhew’s former students may want to wish him a happy 90th birthday. Now living in Windemere, John will turn 90 on November 2. His family will hold an open house birthday party for him in the downstairs dining room on Halloween from 2 to 4 pm. All are welcome to wish him a Happy Birthday and share a glass of wine and piece of birthday cake. Costumes are not required.

Share your blessings and contribute $25 to the Vineyard Committee on Hunger for a Thanksgiving meal for a hungry family. Send your check to VCOH, PO Box 4685, Vineyard Haven MA 02568. Mark your check for “family to family.” VCOH is working with Reliable Market to make sure that Island families in need will have a delicious meal for Thanksgiving and the December holidays.

Reliable Market is assembling a Thanksgiving basket that includes turkey, stuffing, five pounds of potatoes, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, onions, carrots, apples, oranges, fresh butternut squash, canned pumpkin, and gravy. They did this last November and it was a wonderful, complete meal for $25. One family helping one family is a wonderful way to celebrate an Island Thanksgiving.

Congratulations to Bill and Marie Connelly who celebrate 45 happy years together on Saturday.
