Congratulations to Brian and Noreen Flanders on their new grandson, Avery Paige Flanders, the new son of Brianna and Christopher Flanders. He was born a few weeks ago at Falmouth Hospital. The baby was welcomed by his big sister Alanna at the family home in Buzzards Bay. His great-grandparents are Florence Flanders and Richard and Lorraine Mavro.

Sunday afternoon there was a delightful crowd of little creatures saying “trick or treat.” One young fellow was quite impressive — he was costumed as a lighthouse. There was even a small dog done up as a butterfly. Shoppers noticed the Simpson family with Marge, Lisa, and Bart. Princesses and animals were accompanied by Superman and Spiderman in all sizes and shapes. A couple of very small firemen and policemen kept everyone in order.

I enjoyed a treat last week because I got to ride on the lift on the Island Home for the first time. What a treat that was. It was fun and exciting because I had never even see it working before. Of course, we never did figure out why there were so many cars in standby on a weekday. It doesn’t seem possible that all the rest of the Island had doctor appointments and shopping to do.

Check out the beautiful colors on the Bradford pear trees. Just when it seemed the Island was as beautiful as it could be, these lovely trees have begun to show their vibrant colors. What a lovely fall we have enjoyed.

Veterans Day is next Thursday. Ed Colligan says help is needed putting up the flags at 7:30 am and taking them down at 3 pm. There are usually a good number of helpers in the morning, but they are desperate for more help in the afternoon. There are now 450 flags honoring our veterans in our cemetery. You can do your part by assisting with the flags.

Don’t forget your free flu shot on Veterans Day.

Congratulations to Lillian Colligan who celebrated her 80th birthday at the Legion Hall on Saturday with more than 100 people joining her party. Family and friends also came from off-Island for the occasion.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Lena Hanschka. Tomorrow, wish the best to Alice Marshall. Happy birthday on Saturday to Sam Myers and Marilyn O’Callaghan. The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will host a special luncheon at noon a week from Saturday at The Grill on Main on Upper Main Street in Edgartown. Tribal elder and genealogist June Manning will speak about the Wampanoag Tribe. Enjoy authentic foods and traditional tribal drumming and dance. For $25 tickets call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440. Proceeds benefit the efforts to secure a home for the day-care program for seniors.

Every fall the Garden Club selects the prettiest window boxes in each town center. Tisbury winners this year are Two Susans, Vineyard Kinda Life, Alley Cat, Jabas Gallery, and Rainy Day. Following several years of blue ribbon awards, the Cronig’s has been placed on the Hall of Fame list.

See a French film “Father of My Children” on Saturday at the Cornell Theatre. This is a story of a French film producer, a wife he loves, three delightful children, and his stimulating job. The movie starts at 7:30 pm.

Heard on Main Street: Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
