To the permanent drawbridge

Looking west on Beach Road, it’s easy to see

where the original drawbridge used to be.

Although its replacement is temporary,

its operation at times has seemed contrary.

Twice, lest I miss my ticketed ferry,

I had to take the round-about route to reach Tisbury.

I know not what problems its opening has posed;

but sometimes it seems difficult getting it closed.

On days when it seems something’s gone wrong,

both lines at the bridge seem a mile long.

Let’s hope funding is “catch-as-catch-can,”

and we’ll soon see a start on a permanent span.
