The RCBL, the Island’s venerable basketball league that provides healthy exercise for some of the Island’s young, and some not-so-young men, and free entertainment for players’ family and friends and others, began play Monday evening at the Boys and Girls Club, Edgartown, to be continued on a weekly basis through February.
Game one pitted the Lakers against the Heat. John Swan (10), Ryan Murtha (8) and Clark Agnew (8) led the Heat to a 43-36 lead at the half.
The Heat repeated its first half performance in the second, finishing the contest with 87 points. Agnew (18), Jason Dyer (14), Tim Scott (14), Captain Sandy Fisher (12), Swan (11) and Murtha (11) all finished with double figures.
However, the Lakers warmed to the task in the second half enough to catch up and take the lead and finish on top, 96-89. Estrella had the game high 28. Jeff LaBell (15), Jason O’Donnell (13) Noah Hazelton (13), Dale Rogers (11), and Caleb Nicholson (10) made it to double figures.
Final count: Lakers 96, Heat 87.
In the second game of the double-header, Asil Cash led the Bulls to a 57–46 lead over the Suns at the half with 16 first half points, then more than doubled that number in the second half to finish with a team, game, and evening high of 38.
Also in twin columns for the Bulls were Damon Mello (29) and Brant Silvia (26).
James Holenko led Suns scorers with 21 points. Team Captain Mike Baptiste finished with 19 and Matt Brown contributed 14 in an abbreviated appearance.
Next Monday The Lakers and Suns go at it at 6:15 pm and the Heat and Bulls square off at 8:00.
