The Turkey Open

The 15th annual Turkey Open Tennis Tournament, at The Vineyard Tennis Center, November 12-14, was a fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Stan Hart and Don Davis, two well-loved Island tennis players.

There were 50 players in two mixed doubles adult divisions and an inaugural juniors division.

The well established team of veterans Hope Callen and Tony Omer edged Laura Schroeder and Patrick Caine in the semi-finals of the A group in a third set tie breaker; then they went on to win the tournament and take home the turkeys with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Cynthia Margolis and Tyson Tyler.

The husband and wife team of Mollee and Lorne Lewis won the A group consolation round defeating the team of Susan Safford and Ken Armstead in a tight three set match, 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.

The B group draw was won by a pair of players new to the competition. Kelly Hess and Mark Marchand overcame a 3-6 first set loss to win the second set 6-3, and the third in a tiebreaker 10-8, edging Tammy King and Todd Hollister. Peter Lally and Diane Morgan won the B group consolation finals besting Anne Williamson and Leo McHugh in a tiebreaker, 6-0, 5-7, 11-9.
