Black Friday shopping on-Island

Traditionally the Friday following Thanksgiving kicks off the beginning of the holiday shopping chaos. It is the day that retailers begin a conversion to profitability for the holiday season, hence the name Black Friday. Most retail venues open early and offer huge savings on their products, which makes for the busiest shopping day of the year. For us on the Island, while slightly muted compared to the mainland, it brings some great opportunities.

For those early risers (thankfully it does not require a 4 am wake-up such as those sales at Target) we have CB Stark and Rainy Day kicking off the shopping season at 7:30 am. CB Stark has a big 10 to 50 percent off storewide sale. Arrive between 7:30 and 9:30 am to receive an additional 10 to 30 percent off. It sounds awesome to me, as who doesn’t like to find a little bling underneath the tree?

Rainy Day is offering the first 25 people through the door a special gift. Not to worry if you are number 26 as there will be a special discount coupon (25 to 50 percent off) for everyone who arrives between 7:30 and 9:30 am. You can use the discount at any point that day, so make sure to get up early, even if it is just to get your discount coupon. Don’t forget about their standard specials too. There is the Frequent Buyer Card for Crabtree & Evelyn or Thymes products where you will get your ninth product free. You might also try the Customer Appreciation Card that allows you 25 percent off one product after your fifth purchase of items $20 or more.

Pat and Bethany over at East Chop Sleep Shop are also getting into the holiday mode with their first ever (they have been open for 26 years) Black Friday Sale. They will offer everything in stock at 20 to 50 percent off. Pat wanted to remind you, “While beds are the biggest part of our business, we are so much more. We carry anything that goes on the bed and are a great resource for affordable gift items. Shopping is always friendly and hassle free as we are fully stocked, year-round. Our [regular, not holiday] hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday. We deliver Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.””

Vineyard Decorators are having a huge Inventory Blowout sale this Friday and Saturday to make room for new arrivals. Use this 40 percent off sale on all in-stock items to update for your holiday guests.

J. McLaughlin, the classic American clothing store in Edgartown, is hosting their first Thanksgiving Sale with savings up to 60 percent off this Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Love dogs? Who doesn’t, especially when there is an Early Dog Sale for one day only this Friday. The Black Dog is offering 30 percent off everything in the store from 8 to 10 am then 15 percent off from 10 am to closing. To seal the deal, they will also have a free hot cup of coffee waiting for you from 8 am to 12 noon.

Interested in a “Guilt Free Indulgence?” The YMCA invites everyone to their Black Friday Turkey Burner Day from 7 am to 5 pm. You can work off your turkey and shop at the grand opening of their Y Café. You can also get ahead of the game and pick up some gift certificates for your loved ones.

Other places to save during the holidays as frequent shoppers/visitors are: An Island Touch, Edgartown Cinemas, and Summer Shades. Neila Hoffman, owner of An Island Touch, has a special offer for Islanders at her massage and spa center. Purchase two gift certificates at their holiday reduced rates (a total of $150 instead of $200) and receive a free half-hour massage for yourself. What a great way to ensure some quality time with yourself this busy holiday season.

At Edgartown Cinemas, make sure to get your very own Bonus Footage Rewards card. Purchase 9 tickets and get your 10th ticket free. They have been doing it for a year now and I have to say I have received a couple of free movies already.

Summer Shades has a fantastic deal for you as a local — 20 percent off. Can you believe they have been offering this awesome discount to Island residents since 1985? This is a huge help as being on an island in the north, we seem to need eye protection 12 months a year (and I know we like to look good at the same time).

Speaking of looking good, Panache has stepped up to offer us some help. Relax and unwind with a Mani/Pedi Special — $50 instead of $75 — or get 20 percent off your first-time visit with stylist Tracy.

I am fully expecting that you will all enjoy your turkey, then get to bed early so you can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for your Black Friday Island extravaganza.
