The Vineyarder junior varsity played Pope John Paul II High School of Hyannis Saturday morning. The Vineyarders scored on their first possession marching 75 yards in nine plays, abetted by a facemask penalty called on the visitors. The attempt to add two extra points failed.
Pope John Paul responded also traversing 75 yards for an equalizing score, then successfully ran for two points to go up: 8-6.
It took nine plays for the Islanders to retake the lead on a 13-yard pass from Alec Tattersall to Brandon Watkins early in the second quarter. MV went for two extra points and succeeded taking a 14-8 lead.
Before the mid-game break Pope John would score twice more and the Vineyard once. The score at the half was 24-20 in favor of Pope John Paul.
The visitors scored another touchdown on the third play of the period and added a two-point conversion.
MV answered recovering a Papal fumble on the 15-yard line. Runs by Tony Beth and Kyle Stobie set up a one-yard plunge by Tattersall.
The teams had scored the same number of touchdowns but Pope John Paul converted their extra point opportunities and the Vineyarders did not.
Before the contest ended, Pope John Paul would add another 8 points. Final: 40-26.
