The Martha’s Vineyard junior high football squad played the first game in Saturday’s Island Cup clash with Nantucket on the jayvee soccer field at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
The game was tight for one half, with each team trading touchdowns. Nantucket scored first, but MV answered back directly on Spencer Schofield’s 15-yard sweep down the right sideline.
The Whalers ground attack proved too much in the second half, however, as Nantucket pulled away for a 22-6 win.
Issak Higgins had a strong game at running back for the Vineyard.
