Paul Jackson, 27, of Edgartown drove his BMW sedan off Herring Creek Road in Edgartown Friday night and lay injured and unconscious in the vehicle all night, until a passerby saw the vehicle at dawn and notified police.

Mr. Jackson remained in the intensive care unit of Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston on Wednesday.

Edgartown police and State Police investigated the accident. Edgartown police issued a statement that said Mr. Jackson was operating his 1992 BMW, traveling south at a high rate of speed.

“Mr. Jackson’s vehicle ran off to the right of the roadway in the vicinity of Knoll Drive and became airborne, flipping numerous times and landing in the woods approximately 56 feet from the roadway,” the statement said. Police and ambulance crews responded at 7:02 am on Saturday morning.

The statement said rescuers used the “jaws of life” tool to remove Mr. Jackson from his car. He was taken by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, then by medical helicopter to Boston.

The investigation continues. Edgartown police ask anyone with information to call 508-627-4343.
