As the cold moves in, so does my lab Molly. She now seems quite content to spend long periods of time stretched out on the couch of the sunroom, lying in the sun and dozing to the sound of the music playing on the CD player. Of course there are breaks taken outside for fetching the balls that I throw for her and “scouting” out the forest that is now bare of leaves. Now we can see the neighboring houses that were hidden by foliage for so many months. The decorations that now are displayed on so many homes break the bleakness of this somewhat barren season.

Have you seen the Christmas decorations along the bulkhead and the lighted tree in Lake Anthony? What a welcome it presents to all those who travel to our town. Take time to see the decorations and don’t miss the super gigantic lights and decorations at the Gatchel home on County Road. Oh so many choices of different programs, concerts, and activities taking place on this small Island during this holiday season.

The Minnesingers Winter Shows will take place at the Whaling Church in Edgartown on December 10 and 11. Some of the talented MVRHS performers will be Oak Bluffs students Sam Oslyn, Mitch Lowe, Olivia Becchio, Jenna Lambert, and Amalie Tinus.

On Saturday, Dec. 11, Dan Wolf, our state senator-elect, will attend the Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Council meeting to hear from Vineyard Democrats and Independents about their priorities for action in the next two years of the legislature, and to talk about his own ideas and plans for the future. The Council welcomes all interested Islanders to attend. The meeting is at the Howes House in West Tisbury, across from Alley’s, from 9 to 10:30 am. Good people, good ideas, and some holiday cheer!

This holiday season, Island Alpaca will collect donations of gifts for children or non-perishable foods (value of $10 or more) at the farm, from now until December 24. Bring your unwrapped gift, or purchase one at the Island Alpaca Farm Store. With every donation, Island Alpaca will enter a ticket to win either a $100 or $50 gift certificate to the Island Alpaca Farm Gift Shop. Drawings for the winners will be held on December 24.

The Handmade From the Heart sale to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will take place during Christmas in Edgartown week. Stop by the Dr. Daniel Fisher House on December 14 between 10 am and 4 pm for this fabulous sale of handmade gifts and complete your Christmas shopping list for a very worthy cause.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Dec. 16, and the Reflections of Peace Concert at our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oak Bluffs. The concert begins at 7:30 pm with a variety of wonderful musicians and voices sharing their talents, directed by Peter Boak. The church is filled with candles, lights, greens, and roses giving an aura of love and gratitude in this season of hope. This is the 14th year for this concert, which benefits Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard.

We send birthday smiles to Tony Maseda and Patrick Parker on December 10, Jenna Gosson and Chuck Lehman on the 12th, followed by Peter Tennant the next day, Pat Law and my daughter-in-law Debra Alley on the 15th, and Mike Marchand on December 15.Enjoy your week.Peace
