So many have helped

To the Editor:

I hope a simple thank you will express my appreciation to all the people who have helped me during the last nine weeks. I had the misfortune of falling on Columbus Day, injuring my hip. Minutes later the sound of John Rose, the Oak Bluffs EMTs, and police officers assured me I was in good hands. The emergency room staff at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, and later Mass General helped put me back together.

Tim Madden, our state representative, softened the blow for my wife, Sharon, who had to spend a week in Boston looking after me. His help finding comfortable accommodations close to the hospital made it easier for our family visits.

A second week at JML Rehab in Falmouth gave me the skills to arrive home and begin a slow process toward recovery.

The staff at the Tisbury School has been covering my classes seamlessly, I am told. My colleagues on the board of selectmen and the staff in the town hall have allowed me to recover at my own pace.

Lastly, it has been extraordinary how many friends and neighbors from all over the Island have reached out with dinners, phone calls, cards, and best wishes in person. It makes you stop and realize what a very special place we live in. Thank you all.
