The Martha’s Vineyard eighth grade boys travel basketball team split its games on the road last weekend. At Raynham, Saturday, the Islanders started slowly and found themselves trailing by 15 points at the half. They turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and came within a point of knotting the score. A final shot beat the clock but bounced off the rim and Raynham claimed victory, 48-45.
Tim Roberts led Vineyard scorers with 14 points. Both Colin Cameron and Brandon Dwane contributed 8.
The team traveled to North Plymouth Saurday with defense at the top of the agenda. They held the South Shore boys to 29 points and scored 39 of their own. Colin Cameron was high scorer with nine points. Both Tim Roberts and Mike Mussell added eight.
Girls play a nail-biter
The eighth grade girls travel team played against Lakeville on Saturday, December 11 and lost by one point in the final seconds of the game. The final score was 33-32.
Diamond Araujo scored 10 points, including two three-pointers. Mariah Duarte followed with 9 points and Taija Brown and Lucy Hackney had 5 each.
On Sunday, December 12 the girls traveled to Nauset, where they won, 39-19. Mariah Duarte scored 17, followed by Taija Brown with 8, Lucy Hackney with 6, Diamond Araujo with 4 and Aubrey Ashmun with 2.
On Saturday, the 8th graders faced another tough, undefeated team, Franklin, in Oak Bluffs. Despite excellent rebounding by Diamond Araujo and some strong defensive play, especially by Julia Neville, Heidi White, and Jose Iadiacco, too many missed shots and turnovers led to a 43-14 defeat.
On Sunday, the girls traveled to Dartmouth where they played strong but lost, 40-29 . Mariah Duarte led the scoring with 11 points, Lucy Hackney followed with 6, and Taija Brown and Diamond Araujo each had 5. The girls have a break until January 8th when they will face Yarmouth-Dennis off-Island.
In the intersholastic junior high basketball league the Up-Island Tisbury boys outscored their down-Island cousins in the Tigerdome, Tuesday, 66-30.
Tim Roberts led all scorers for Westiz with 22 points. Matthew Stone added 19 and Brandon Dwane’s contribution was 12.
Mike Mussell’s 13 points led Tisbury and Grant Santos added eight.
