We say goodbye to 2010, with a glance at the year about to end and a look forward to the fresh one.
As has been its practice for many years, The Times invited selected Island leaders and community members to review some of the accomplishments and challenges of the year that is about to end and to consider what may lie ahead in 2011.
Ronald H. Rappaport is a founding director of the Edgartown law office of Reynolds, Rappaport, Kaplan & Hackney. A native of Oak Bluffs and resident of Chilmark, Mr. Rappaport is counsel to five of the six Island towns and the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank. He also plays a significant role in many Martha's Vineyard civic organizations.
Dr. Pieter Pil is Martha's Vineyard Hospital chief of staff and one of two hospital staff surgeons. He is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine and did post-graduate training at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He and his wife, Dr. Karen Casper, a hospital emergency room physician, live in Vineyard Haven and have four children.
Cynthia Mitchell is a West Tisbury selectman. Over the years she has served her town and the Island in several elected and appointed positions. She is a former town treasurer, member of the board of assessors, and chairman of the Dukes County Health Council. Ms. Mitchell is executive director of Island Health Care in Edgartown, which provides adult primary and urgent medical care.
