Winter art

Featherstone Center for the Arts returns after a short holiday break with new classes, as well as the popular standards.

New additions include Poetry for Everyone with Jill Jupen, which meets from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesdays through Feb. 24. Returning standards include Knitting for Others with the Rev. Judy Campbell, on Thursdays from 3 to 5 pm; and two drawing groups: the Firehouse Figure on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm, and the Tom Maley Life, from 10 am to noon on Tuesdays.

Lani Carney returns with several art classes for children, including this week’s Saturday Art Adventure: All About Penguins and Polar Bears, for children ages 3 to 8. The class, which varies weekly, is every Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon.

Relatively new to the Featherstone teacher roster is Brianna Valenti, who teaches a Ceramics Open Studio for toddlers ages 3 to 4, every Wednesday from 10 to 11 am.

Featherstone advises all to register for classes by calling 508-693-1850 or visiting featherstoneart.org.

YMCA news

The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard has numerous events scheduled for the upcoming winter months; most immediately being the continuation of Middle School Nights and Teen Center High School Nights. Middle schoolers are welcome to the center on Thursday evenings starting January 13, from 3 to 7 pm. High school students have the center to themselves on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 11 pm.

Studio 57 is a new — by appointment only — venture, for all to create their own audio and video projects, using the new recording and editing studio. For more information or to schedule a time slot, call Tony Lombardi at 508-696-7171.

ACE announces new classes

Next week, Adult and Community Education (ACE MV) hosts walk-in registration for the winter and spring class line-up. In keeping with the ever-changing and improving instructors and classes, ACE MV announces a full class load at five different venues: the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS), the M.V. Public Charter School, the West Tisbury School, Featherstone, and Kitchen Porch Catering. Classes range from Birding with Robert Culbert to Love and Logic Parenting with Sharon L. Engler (free childcare provided), with many one-time-only seminars such as Cooking A Valentine’s Dinner with Christian Thornton of Atria Restaurant, on Feb. 10.

Register in person at the MVRHS on Jan. 4 and 5 from 4:30 to 6 pm, or visit acemv.org.
