Shoppers began taking advantage of the holiday pre-inventory sales in the early hours of the blizzard on Sunday. Intrepid Islanders seeking bargains don’t let the weather get in their way. Most sales in town continue all week.

Our town’s road crews were out early, sanding and keeping our roads as safe as possible. Of course, the ultimate safe driving is in your hands.

Holiday stories will always be treasured. My five-year-old granddaughter in Virginia was watching her mother shovel the driveway. She surprised her mother by declaring, “You do a pretty good job, for a wife.”

I am not saying that the child was given too many gifts for Christmas. However, she did call on Christmas Day, giving us all her good wishes. She said she had received everything she wanted, and then quietly asked, “Nana, did you send me something for Christmas?”

There is another story too complicated to tell about the birthday surprise party where the guest of honor purchased the cake as a gift for the hostess. All the guests enjoyed that one. Laughter is always welcome.

Leslie Hewson is a popular caterer who ran the Mediterranean Restaurant on the harbor. Now she is making desserts for Offshore Ale. You can order her specialty desserts by calling Offshore Ale. Her chocolate mousse cake is something very special.

The first Sunday of the month means winter lobster rolls will be offered at the Grace Church parish hall. That starts January 2. Whether you are still partying or preparing for the Patriots’ game, get your holiday lunch from 12:30 to 2 pm. Call 508-693-0332 for info and large orders.

ACE MV winter sessions begin January 10, a week from Monday. Walk-in registration is this Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 pm at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School; or register online at www.acemv.org. For information, call 774-301-1131.

The classes will be held at six locations: MVRHS, the Charter School, Featherstone Center, West Tisbury School, Kitchen Porch, and MVTV. Choose from classes in astronomy, computer, Portuguese, scrapbooks, social dancing, creative writing and college-level English composition, EKG & CPR training, food sanitation training, and GED.

The West Tisbury Congregational Church community suppers begin on Wednesday at 5:30 pm and will be held every Wednesday through March 30, weather permitting. Side dishes are gratefully accepted but not required. All are welcome.

Children’s programs at the Vineyard Haven Library begin in January. Ages 5 and up will enjoy board games next Thursday at 3:30 pm.

Mark your new calendar now. Chris Morse, owner of the Granary Gallery at the Red Barn, will talk about Alfred Eisenstaedt at the Vineyard Haven Library a week from Sunday, Jan. 9, at 2 pm. He was the noted photographer for Life magazine and one of the foremost photojournalists of the 20th century. Some of Eisenstaedt’s famous images will be on display. Light refreshments will be served following the talk.

Congratulations go out to Hank and Linda (Dickson) Unczur. They start the New Year by celebrating their 40th anniversary on January first.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Ron Druett who parties in New Zealand today. Happy birthday and good wishes for a very happy new year to Mark Kurth, Steve Bernier, and Jeremy Rockman. They party on January first. John Chapman will celebrate with lobster rolls on Sunday. Birthday greetings to Romeo Bonelli on Tuesday. Wednesday belongs to Roberta Kirn.
