No matter how deep we get into the 2000s, the dates still look so sci-fi to me. I keep wondering where are the hovercrafts and all the silver lame and crazy sunglasses that back in the 80s we thought would be the norm by now. Then again, it still blows my mind when I look at an iPad and remember getting up to change the channel on the old console TV, adjusting the rabbit ears, changing from UHF to VHF, et cedra. Anyway, I hope you all had enjoyable new years celebrations and that you are all relaxed, refreshed, and ready for what lies ahead.

A toss of rice goes out to Morgan Guerin and Michael Olson, who tied the knot December 28 in Paradise Island, Bahamas, with their immediate families present. Morgan is the daughter of Joe and Katie Guerin of Edgartown. Best wishes to the lovely couple for a bright and happy future.

Diane Smadbeck was thrilled to report that all five of her boys were home for the holidays this year. Louis, Mark, Jeffrey, Patrick, and Jamie all made their ways from points beyond the Bourne Bridge to spend time with Mom and Dad. That must have been one rowdy Christmas dinner.

Troy Cavallo celebrated his first birthday December 30 at grandparents Coo and Donna’s house. In addition to Coo and Donna and parents, Jonas Cavallo and Anastasia Oliveira, Troy’s other grandfather, Ollie, and Uncle Luke were present to watch Troy enjoy his first birthday cupcake. Hope you had a good time, little buddy.

They’ve been keeping busy down at the Anchors, with lectures and lunches, chocolate tastings and comedians on the docket this winter. The Renaissance Educational series, taught by volunteers, begins Friday, January 7th at 10 am under the tutelage of Nancy Lotz, a retired teacher. Ms. Lotz will be teaching a class on the Provinces Of France, including Normandy, Brittany, Provence, Ile de France, and Alsace. Nancy will provide books, photos, and short videos that describe the variety of the landscape and the cultural differences representative of each province. If you have a special area of knowledge you would like to share, whether it be poetry, history, crafts, meditation, etc., please contact the Council on Aging and volunteer to teach a class. The Anchors also offers lunches on Tuesdays and Fridays, with a special birthday lunch the last Friday of the month. All ages are welcome, so bring a friend. In January, kitchen volunteer Evelyn Anderson, a great cook from France, will be making broccoli and apple soup, beef bourguignon with mushrooms, carrots, onions, and noodles, and her amazing chocolate gnash cake. Lots more is on the agenda for February, so pick up a newsletter at the Anchors or go online to the Town of Edgartown web site.

The Edgartown Library book group has selected Red Hook Road, a novel by Ayelet Waldman, for discussion at its next meeting on Tuesday, January 25, at 4 pm. This novel takes its name from the winding coastal road where the story plays out; set over the course of four summers in Maine, this is the tale of two families and of the ways in which their lives are unraveled and stitched together by misfortune, by good intentions and failure, by love and calamity. If you’d like to reserve a copy so you can read Red Hook Road and join in the conversation, just call the library or ask at the front desk.

Cake and ice cream go out to all our New Year’s babies, young and old—or, I should say, young and younger? Happy birthday to Alex Morrison and Lindsay Medeiros Belisle, who both celebrate today, and to Kristin Warriner, who celebrates Sunday, January 9. Hope you all have a lovely time.

It really has been exciting to see bustle in the Old Colony building these past couple of months, with Edgartown Hardware making the move. And now it appears they are preparing to open the doors. They are planning to reopen at 7:30 am on Monday, January 10 in their new home. And there will be life on the corner of West Tisbury and Pinehurst once again.

Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions. I hope on that list is a promise to report the goings-on of you and your loved ones to yours truly. Me, I have to go work on my hovercraft designs. They say if you ever want to get something done, you might as well do it yourself.
