Surveyors on State Road in Vineyard Haven began preliminary work this week for a new sidewalk the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division (MassHighway) plans to design and construct by summer.
The existing paved sidewalk along State Road from Camp Street up to Pine Tree Road will be replaced with a new concrete walk with granite curbing, Tisbury department of public works director Fred LaPiana said yesterday.
The new sidewalk will match the design of the one MassHighway redid previously along State Road that runs from Pine Tree Road almost to West Spring Street.
“That will make it a lot safer for everybody,” Mr. LaPiana said.
The sidewalk project received state funds through the Island’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
“My understanding is that the state has agreed to spend our TIP money for replacing that sidewalk,” Mr. LaPiana said. “And the reason that they’re able to do that is because the rotary project in Oak Bluffs got pushed back a year, so that money became available and has to be expended quickly. It just so happened that everybody on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission Joint Transportation Committee agreed that the sidewalk would be good use of the money.”
