High School girls’ hockey first
The MVRHS girls’ hockey team lost 6-3 to Marshfield on Wednesday, December 29. The game was not without highlights.
Celia Mercier scored all three Vineyard goals then scored three more as the Islanders finished the old year with a more than impressive 10-2 victory over Peabody on Friday, December 31.
It was the first time a Vineyard girl had scored hat tricks in two consecutive games. Celia not only scored three times, she also assisted teammates to score — thrice.
Just when was the last time a Vineyard skater had two consecutive hat trick games is unknown. It’s tantamount to a baseball player hitting two grand slams during a double-header. It can be done. It probably has been done — But certainly not often! Congratulations Celia!
Coach John Fiorito has the girls performing at a high level, much appreciated by the fans.
The Martha’s Vineyard high school boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Bourne, Tuesday, 55-50. Peter Keaney scored 19 points and Randall Jette 15 to lead the Vineyard assault on the Canalmen’s net.
It was the Islanders fourth win against two losses.

Reid won enough points in the tourney to move his ranking up to 40 in New England. Reid trains at Vineyard Youth Tennis and plays first singles on the MVRHS tennis team

Emily in California
Emily Reich, a veteran of four years sailing at MVRHS, now sails for Old Dominion.
Last year, she placed third in the Women’s Nationals held at Madison, Wisconsin. Next week she will sail in the Rose Bowl Regatta at Long Beach, California.
She won’t hear us, of course, but we’re rooting for her just the same.
