Survive winter on the Vineyard with game night

The holidays are over and some of us are settling for a long winter nap. Many of us are already wishing for the summer loving with family and friends. I say, let’s not let the winter blues get to us. Instead we should make our own sunshine.

Get your phone out and make some calls to your friends and family. Invite them over for an impromptu game night, but make sure you are ready to provide the fun first. The Toy Box in Vineyard Haven can help with its large selection of the most popular “board” games, though lately most games seem to be missing the requisite board. Banana Grams ($14.95) was my family’s favorite this Christmas. It never left the dining room table, except for dinner. Everyone got into the Scrabble-like board-less game, from my 13-year-old nephew to my mother (whose age I have been restricted from mentioning). Apples to Apples, Pictionary, and Ruckus are also fun, group-oriented games that are guaranteed to elicit loads of laughs.

The Lazy Frog in Oak Bluffs is also a fantastic stop for the gamer in you, as their selection ranges from the traditional to the more unique or wild, such as Beer Pong. They are also a leader in supplies for the Frisbee golf set, which seems to be leaping into hugeness if the busy parking area for the Frisbee golf course means anything. Just remember to bundle up and wear fingerless gloves for better grip. The Lazy Frog is “hoppin” on Friday and Saturdays and will be “crocked” Sunday through Thursday through the winter.

Brickman’s in Vineyard Haven, along with Granite in Edgartown also have a solid game selection that will help round out your cupboard.

For those looking to keep your summer happiness going on all winter long, start your own monthly poker night for the guys, Bunco for the ladies, or a Book Club for everyone.

If you have never been a part of a book club, not to worry — the phenomenal staff at Bunch of Grapes can help guide you in book selections that would fit your group’s demographics. Just stop in ahead of time to make sure they will have enough copies in the store for your club in time to read before your first meeting. Other than that, the sky’s the limit for how you want to set up your evening. Book Clubs are also a great thing for teenagers, and Riley’s Read in Vineyard Haven has a wonderful selection of popular teen books to choose from.

If your group of friends tend to want a more relaxed, social-only event, then you might want to host a wine tasting. Jamieson at Your Market in Edgartown is available to help lead you to a great selection that fits your budget. You could also have each of your guests bring their favorite bottle of wine to share. Then all you would have to do is provide some cheeses to compliment the evening.

Soigné in Edgartown can fit both wine and cheese needs, especially with their wonderful, unique selection of specialty cheeses. Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury also carries a sublime selection of cheeses and the required accompaniments along with fabulous fresh flowers to give your place the color of spring.

So don’t delay, start making your own fun to laugh the winter blues away.
