To the Editor:
I want to apologize to the Island community for driving while impaired with alcohol, on December 31, 2010.
The memory of that night is seared into my consciousness, and most of all, I am filled with gratitude to have not harmed anyone and deep regret and aspiration to never repeat such an action. I only wish that I could directly transmit the traumatic experience of being arrested to anyone at risk of driving under the influence. There is no other feeling in the world like losing your personal freedom, even briefly. It is true aversion therapy.
Thank you to the Oak Bluffs police and all those at the Edgartown jail for fulfilling your roles with precision but compassion. To spend New Year’s Eve with you guys may not have been my happiest, but I hope that it may be my most transformative.
