Is soup not your thing but you’re interested in getting together with friends and neighbors to catch up on what’s happening on the other side of town?

Then you will be pleased to know that Tuesday night soup suppers at the Church have evolved into soup and potluck. Swing by at 5:30 pm with a dish to share if you have the time to whip up a little something. If not, wander in with an empty belly and enjoy the bounty of what others have brought. Bananagrams tiles will surely be poured out on the table in a timely fashion. Even if you are not hungry, stop in for a few rounds of the Scrabble-like game.

A course on First Aid, including CPR and the Heimlich maneuver, will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Chilmark Community Church education building. Led by an American Heart Association certified instructor, Peter Tennant, participants will learn First Aid and Heimlich certificates. Lasting from 10 am to 2:30 pm, the course is sponsored by the church and is free of charge. Organizers recommend packing a sandwich for lunch; dessert and beverages will be provided. The course is open to all Vineyard residents. To pre-register call Marilyn Hollinshead at 508-693-5803.

The Chilmark School kids have taken up skating for physical education. For the next couple of weeks they will board the big yellow school bus with mittens, helmets, and skates in tow, bound for the MV Ice Arena. Big thanks to their phys ed teacher Channon Capra for taking to the ice with the gang. At the end of the day on the school yard, I heard things like: “that was awesome,” “can’t wait until next week,” “my behind is bruised,” “I only fell three times.”

In collaboration with their elder friends at Windemere, the 2/3 students have produced a 2011 calendar filled with photographs by Brooks Carroll, Noah Glasgow, Menasha Leport, Kiera McCarthy, Fynn Monahan, Imogen Taylor, Bella Thorpe, Madia Bellebuono, Dash Christy, Kieran Karabees, Thea Keene, Adam Knight, and Cary More-Straton. At $10 apiece — a real steal, they are available at the school or Menemsha Texaco.

The children at the Chilmark Preschool remain in good hands with acting director Heather Quinn. She and fellow teachers and students keep Chris Abrams in their thoughts by utilizing their “doctor’s office” in the classroom. The children are busy scheduling appointments and playing the part of both doctor and patient.

Chris continues to make great strides after undergoing brain surgery. Although she is dearly missed in the classroom, she checks in from her home in West Tisbury.

Molly Glasgow’s words are in print. You can find an essay on Island weather by the artist-turned-farmer of Grey Barn Farm in the Not Summer issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. If the one essay isn’t enough to quench your taste for hands-on farm living, then check out Molly’s blog at thegreybarnandfarm.com. Her words are priceless.

Susan Larsen continues to train for the 2011 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Sue will train until the May event by pounding the pavement, lifting weights, and collaborating with her daughter, Brigida, who was chosen to be part of this year’s youth crew. If possible, please be part of the cure by helping Sue, and all who are impacted by breast cancer, by making a tax-deductible contribution. Just visit her fundraising page at www.avonwalk.org/goto/susan.larsen. Sue, we are all proud of you for being in it to end it.

When Will Holtham sold the Home Port a few years ago, there was a lot of talk about what would happen to all of the ideas and recipes that went into satisfying the hunger of so many over the years. Would he pass them on or take them to his grave? The answer is here: “Home Port Cookbook: Beloved Recipes from Martha’s Vineyard,” a collection by chef Will Holtham, will hit the shelves in May. Filled with recipes we all will want to cook and pictures of subjects we all will recognize, it is available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

On Wednesday Jan. 26, at noon, you can sit down with a hot bowl of chowder while watching Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and Meryl Streep in the Oscar-winning film, “The Hours.” This free event is brought to you by the Friends of the Chilmark Library as part of the winter series, Chowder and a Movie!

If noon on Wednesday doesn’t fit into your schedule then the 7 pm free Friday night movie at the library may catch your attention. “Philadelphia Story” with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant will entice you out on a chilly January night.

A little tidbit of history: On this day in 1969 Richard Nixon waved to the crowds along with the First Lady as they rode in the Inaugural motorcade.
