Virginia Creighton Burnham, 88, of Hopedale died Friday, January 14, 2011 at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Burnham, who died in 1999.

She was born November 6, 1922, in Milford, the daughter of the late Eugene J. and Ethel M. (Pike) Creighton and graduated Salutatorian of her class from Hopedale High School. She was also a graduate from Simmons College, Boston.

Ms. Burnham was an assistant librarian for a number of years at the Bancroft Memorial Library in Hopedale. She was a long-time member of the Hopedale Unitarian Parish and was also a volunteer with the Milford Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, the New York Times crossword puzzle, knitting, Martha’s Vineyard and the beach. She was also a proud charter member of the East Chop “Stitch and Bitch” Club.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care provided by Candi Pickering and her team at There’s No Place Like Home Elderly Services in Millville.

She is survived by one son, Brian L., and his wife, Carol Burnham, of Ashland; three daughters — Gail B. Stevenson of Martha’s Vineyard, Cathy N. Burtt, and Ann C. Burnham and her husband, Steven Silver, all of Hopedale; three grandchildren — Lisa Burnham, Jillian (Burtt) Lawrence and Jack Stevenson; two great-grandchildren — Zachary Burnham and Gabriel Johnson; a sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth (Burnham) Fisher of Poway, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and burial will be private in Hopedale Village Cemetery, Hopedale.
