Whether you’re a contestant or an attendee, the annual Big Chili Contest has proved to be a fun January afternoon.
This year’s 25th annual event is this Saturday, Jan. 29 (snow date: Jan. 30) at 11 am at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs. Though there will be a limited amount of tickets sold at the door, tickets are currently sold out at all vending locations.
The party is a benefit for the Red Stocking Fund, and features amateur and professional chili-making contestants. Ticket holders get a spoon upon entering and can consume as much chili as they’d like. All can vote for their favorites, and cash prizes are awarded for first, second, third places in both amateur and professional categories. WMVY radio staffers vote for special categories including Best Presentation and Best Vegetarian. New this year, Jenny Johnson of NECN’s TV Diner will choose The People’s Choice, the top chili from all entries.
Live music includes performances from the Island’s Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, as well as Mariachi Mexico Lindo and The Baha Brothers.
