Happy 50th, MVCS!
For Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, 2011 is a big, big year — the 50th anniversary of its existence. The “Island’s Helping Hand,” which offers a broad array of social services to Islanders in need, has scheduled a number of events and special programs to commemorate the milestone. None of them are more important than an actual birthday party scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 12 noon to 2 pm, when the public is invited to come sample birthday cake baked up for the occasion by Island bakers.
Flowers to fight cancer
For more than 35 years, the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days® program has been making a difference in the fight against cancer and providing hope for those facing the disease. The last day to reserve daffodils is Friday, February 25, daffodils will be delivered across Martha’s Vineyard on Tuesday, March 15.
“Daffodil Days is about more than just giving beautiful flowers,” said Dorothy Bangs of Vineyard Haven, the longtime volunteer coordinator of Daffodil Days on the Vineyard. “It is everyone’s opportunity to share hope for a world free of cancer, and winning the fight against cancer starts right here in our community.”
Money raised through Daffodil Days enable the Society to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer with courage and optimism, while also funding groundbreaking cancer research, educating people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection, and advocating for meaningful public health policies that benefit the community.
