Girls travel hoops reach finals

The Vineyard fifth grade and seventh grade girls’ travel teams won their opening round playoff games at the Bourne Middle School, Sunday. With those wins the teams advanced to the finals to be held this weekend on the Cape.

The fifth graders remained perfect this season at 13-0 following a 26-20 victory over Sandwich. Molly deBettencourt led M.V. with 18 points. Devin Hill dominated on the glass and chipped in four points.

The girls are scheduled to play Falmouth, Saturday, at the Bourne Middle School for the fifth grade championship. Game time is 10 am.

Sunday at Bourne, the seventh graders won twice.

The Vineyard opened play with a morning contest against Lakeville and prevailed 30-19. Mya Houston scored eight points. Erin Hill and Olivia Smith each scored six.

In the afternoon game, M.V. outlasted Sandwich in a low-scoring defensive struggle, 17-15.

Sandwich used a one-on-one defense to bottle up the Vineyard offense. M.V. finally broke through in the second half, thanks to Erin Hill and Maya Houston, who did an excellent job of getting the ball upcourt against the Sandwich pressure. Sam Hargy was the high scorer with six points.

The Vineyard will play Dartmouth in the final at 10:30 am, Sunday at the Bourne Middle School.

Vineyard boys’ travel team falls in semi-finals

The Vineyard eighth grade boys’ travel team made a good run of it in the Cape League playoffs last weekend. They won their first two games, but lost to host Sandwich in the semi-finals 62-52.

The Vineyard started off the weekend with a 61-43 first round comeback win over Lakeville.

M.V. trailed 17-3 early in the first half. They used a full court press to climb back in the game and overtake Lakeville 29-27 at halftime.

Alex GordonBeck led the Vineyard with 20 points. Colin Cameron scored 17, Tim Roberts had 9, and Matt Stone, 8.

M.V. moved on to the quarter-finals and defeated Falmouth 50-41. Alex GordonBeck keyed the Vineyard offense early on with 17 first-half points. Matt Stone, Brandon Dwane, and Jack Yuen led the way in the second half. Tim Roberts and Colin Cameron controlled the boards at both ends of the floor.

Sunday, in the semi-finals, the Islanders ran into a much bigger, top-seeded Sandwich team. M.V. kept the game close most of the way. They trailed by 28-24 at halftime and stayed within four points until the two-minute mark. It was then that the bigger Sandwich players took control, grabbed some key offensive rebounds, and pulled away.

Alex GordonBeck finished as the high scorer for M.V. with 13 points. Matt Stone added 11.
