Good wishes for a rapid recovery go to Mary Jean Miner. I am happy to tell you that she is now home recuperating with her new knee. But she is also missing her devoted pet. Rhodie was her third adopted greyhound and did not live to welcome her friend home. Our sympathies go to you as well, Mary Jean.

As I write this, Gretchen Jacobs is still in the hospital recovering from her latest surgery. She may move to a rehab facility in the Cambridge area for a few weeks after she is released from the hospital. We wish her the very best — I will give you an updated address next week. Cards and letters help our friends recover more quickly.

One of my favorite online news sources is the list of “top stories” that appears after I sign off my account at Yahoo. Lately these news items often include a story from the Martha’s Vineyard Times. I like that!

There are some new books with wonderful titles. How do you resist a book called “The Joy of Sox”? There are some repeats, but how to train cats is a book about the impossible. Scrabble puzzles sounds interesting though I have to wonder if you could write a whole book on making fortune cookies. Of course, it may take an entire book to teach me that trick. Or perhaps the book is full of fortunes.

Director Amy Ryan says that the Mini Book Sale at the Vineyard Haven Library on Saturday will offer more than books. This week there will also be bargain bags and free items. All proceeds benefit the children’s programs supported by the Friends of the Library. I am sure Amy hopes you will take advantage of this sale because her office is getting quite crowded out with all the books for sale. This is the best time of year for enjoying a good book. Stop by the library between 1 and 3 pm and gather your favorites.

In addition to books and videos, the Vineyard Haven Library has a number of other reasons for you to visit. Betty Burton invites you to join her at the movies on Tuesday night at 7. The next film is an astonishing true story bursting with hope, heart, and courage. This is the moving report of an unlikely racehorse owner, a housewife who risked everything to make a champion of an incredible horse.

Next Wednesday evening you can enjoy the rare treat of Jemima James and Dan Waters presenting American Acoustic Folk Duets at the library. If you need an introduction, singer-songwriter Jemima James is a cornerstone of the Vineyard folk-music scene and the mom of singer Willy Mason. We have all enjoyed the work of Dan Waters for years. Dan was appointed West Tisbury’s first Poet Laureate in 2006. Also a professional printer and illustrator, Dan is now exploring music as a vehicle for poetry. The concert starts at 7 pm on the main floor of the library.

Then on Thursday evening the Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet to learn more about the issues of the Horn of Africa. Sign up at the library desk or inquire to find out all about these exciting classes.

Good news from Florida. The weather is warming up. That means we should see spring in about a month, right? Just about the time those folks are heading home.

The Capawock will show opera every Sunday afternoon through March 20. Many of you were waiting for this announcement.
