These past few weeks have brought me to a new awareness of the true meaning of handicap access. Because of injuries to my ankles, I will be wearing braces and also use a cane for a while — hopefully short. In the meantime I have found out how difficult it is for me, who is only temporarily hindered by this, to maneuver the streets, doors, and aisles of stores and find handicap parking areas. Did you know that the last handicap parking space on Circuit Ave. is by the Corner Drugstore, that some of the doors to stores are too heavy to push open without assistance, or how difficult it is to walk around the corner from Kennebec Avenue to the Post Office entrance because of the pitch of the sidewalks? Yet many people are so considerate, holding doors open and offering me assistance.

Friends of the O.B. Council on Aging are hosting a Ham and Bean supper with many prizes, on Friday, March 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Senior Center on Wamsutta Avenue. All the traditional fixin’s plus delicious homemade desserts will only cost $8 (for adults) and $4 for children.

Kenny Ponte and his family would like to send a huge thank you to all who braved the rain and came out to support their family by coming to the P-A club for the benefit dinner for Ken. They thank everyone from the bottom of their hearts, especially the great, caring men on the O.B. rescue truck, without whom this dinner would not have happened, and they send their love to all of them. Special thanks to Paul Humber for all of his hard work and a big thank you to Linda Jean’s restaurant for donating the food and to Lanie Benito and Barbara Humber for their help with the cooking. What a great community we live in.

I spoke with Liz Wilson last week and she brought me up-to-date on her daughters’ activities. Her youngest, Katherine, is working in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Allison is the branch manager for Enterprise Car Rentals at Logan; and Eliza is in an accelerated MBA program in N.J. I still think of these three sisters as being students at the Oak Bluffs School.
