A spike in crude oil prices has in turn pushed gasoline prices upwards, so that the price of unleaded gasoline is well north of the $4 level this week at two gas stations in Edgartown, and prices were pressing toward that level at the rest of the down-Island stations.
Wednesday afternoon, a gallon of regular gas cost $4.10 at Sophia's One Stop Mart Mobil in Edgartown. A short distance away, Depot Market Mobil charged $4.05 for regular gas.
The Citgo XtraMart and Tisbury Shell in Vineyard Haven, DeBettencourt's Mobil, and Jim's Package Store in Oak Bluffs all posted a price of $3.98 for a gallon of regular.
The average price of regular gas in Massachusetts was $3.31 Wednesday afternoon, according to massachusettsgasprices.com, a web site that tracks the cost of fuel. The price of gas statewide is up 16 cents from a week ago, and 22 cents from a month ago.
The average price of gas nationwide was $3.39, according to the website, up 29 cents from a month ago.
