MV cools Raider Mites
The MV Travel Mites ice hockey team took on Barnstable, Sunday, and soundly beat them, 6-0. Rookie goalie Aiden Marek was credited with the shutout. He had strong help shielded by defenders Jackson Pachico, Eli Gunderson, Lauren Boyd and Kenny Hatt.
Vineyard scorers included Willie Bruguiere, assisted by Hoffi Hearn; Veronica Wendt, also assisted by Hearn; Peter Gillis, assisted by Aiden Araujo and Kenny Hatt; Hunter Meader, assisted by Liam Marek and Aiden Araujo, with help from Logan Araujo; and Logan Araujo from Kenny Hatt.
Gymnasts Gambol at Norwell
Island Gymnastics Training School’s travel team competed in the Mardi Gras 2011 meet at Head Over Heels Gymnastics in Norwell on February 11 to 13.
Island gymnasts Isis Burt, Sophie Devanski-Noel, Rosie Herman, and Caroline Woodard took fifth place overall and won first place in the Mardi Gras mask contest. Isis Burt placed 4th on vault 9.0; tied for 3rd on bars 8.7; and 3rd on beam 8.8. She was 4th overall.
Sophie Devanski-Noel placed 4th on beam 8.5, 6th on vault 8.8, and tied 7th on both bars and floor 8.0.
Rosie Herman placed 7th on vault 8.9 and 7th on beam 8.3.
Caroline Woodard placed 4th on vault 8.4; 2nd on bars 9.1; 1st on beam 9.0; 5th on floor 8.350, and placed 3rd overall.
This was the first off-Island meet for gymnastics coach Jaime Conroy. The trophy and meet photos are on display at Island Gymnastics on State Road in West Tisbury.
Coed Volleyball season to start
The Interscholastic Volleyball season season begins on Tuesday, March 15, when Edgartown visits Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs invades West Tisbury. Games begin after school at 3:30 pm.
Second games will be played on Thursday, March 17: West Tisbury at Edgarown, Tisbury at Oak Bluffs.
The season finals to find a champion will be Wednesday, April 6,
St Pat’s on the horizon
The annual Saint Patrick’s Day 5K road race and fitness walk will begin at the Ocean View Restaurant and Tavern on Sunday, March 27, at 10:30 am.

Table Tennis trophies
Edgartown’s Bob O’Rourke won the second place trophy in the Under 1000 division at the Quincy Table Tennis Club February Open on Sunday, February 27. He won four three-of-five game matches to qualify for the finals.
Albert Lau of Oak Bluffs was a semi-finalist in the division.
In the Under 1200 division, Alina Wen of Edgartown won six matches before dropping in the semi-finals competition.
All the players mentioned are members of MV Table Tennis which practices weekly at the West Tisbury School and the Vineyard YMCA.
Sharks invite kids to opening day
The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, the Island’s new collegiate-league baseball team, will hold a “promotional day” for all boys and girls who belong to the Martha’s Vineyard Little League and other youth teams.
The club will provide free admission on opening day of the Sharks season for all T-ball, farm league, minor league, and major league team members. “Hopefully several of these young boys and girls will someday play for the Sharks in their very own neighborhood,” said Jerry Murphy, Sharks general manager. “They will get to see homegrown centerfielder Tad Gold, who attended Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, roam the outfield for the Sharks.”
Each Little Leaguer will receive a Sharks T-shirt, according to a press release.
The promotional night is scheduled for 5 pm, Friday, June 10. The gates open at 3 pm. For more information go to mvsharks.com.
RCBL final is Monday
The RCBL Championship will be decided beginning Monday, at the Boys & Girls Club in Edgartown in a three game series between the league champs, the Heat, and the runners up, the Bulls, who outlasted the Suns to reach the finals.
The first game of the title–deciding series will tip off at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 7. Game two will be one week later, March 14, also at 6:30 pm at the B&G. If needed, there will be a third and final game on Monday, March 21.
Adler reaches Florida finals
Paul Adler, one of the Vineyard’s frequent tennis tournament players, reached the finals in mixed doubles at the Delray Beach International tennis tourney on February 19. Forty eight players vied for honors.
