Edgartown 4th-grader Jake Pendergraft traveled to Houston last weekend to deliver a check for $7,000 to a YMCA facility in Houston where the money will help about 80 kids take part in a flag football program. It was money he helped raise with a birthday wish.

Last fall, when Jake still lived in the Houston area, he told his mom Danielle Pendergraft he didn't want presents for his birthday, but wanted to raise money for charity.

The idea grew into a football game with some of the NFL's most notable retired players. The families of Jake's friends each donated $150 or more for a chance to play with the pros. The event raised nearly $11,000.

In addition to the YMCA donation, Jake also plans to give the balance to the NFL Alumni's Caring for Kids program.
