Babe Ruth signup

The Vineyard Babe Ruth Girls Softball league will hold sign ups for girls ages 8 to 11and 12 to 16 at the high school’s Sancy Pachico Gym, from 10 am to 2 pm, Saturday, March 19 and from 1-3 pm, Saturday, March 26.

Vineyard Youth Baseball

Vineyard Youth Baseball, which includes tee-ball, farm league, minors/majors little league baseball and Babe Ruth baseball has announced the schedule for registrations and tryouts. Major league tryouts and registration for all leagues ages ten and older takes place from 10 am to 2 pm, Saturday at the regional high school gym. Final registration and makeup tryouts will be from 1 pm to 3pm at the gym on March 19.

Sam is back

Samantha Potter recently returned from the IMG Nick Bollettierri Tennis Academy, Bradenton, Florida. Her trip was courtesy of the Vineyard Youth Tennis Scholarship Fund Merit Award.

Samantha trained at the Academy with a number of children from around the world. “It was a great experience and I would definitely love to go back there again. I would like to thank Vineyard Youth Tennis for this award, I will continue to work hard at my tennis to achieve my goals,” she said in an email to The Times.

Samantha is currently ranked in the top 40 in New England in the girls’ 14 and under class and is the top girl junior on the Island. She trains regularly at VYT, often with her father.

Stay healthy

The Vineyard Tennis Center will sponsor “Stay In The Now” Day! hosted by Kye 2 Da Core on Sunday March 20 from 1 to 3 pm.

Activities will include core, strength, cardio kickboxing, and nutrition. There will be instruction of what young people can do to stay healthy in the future, according to a press release. RSVP by March 17th to The Vineyard Tennis Center, Workout & Spa. 508-696-8000,

St. Patrick’s Day race

Next Sunday, March 27 is the annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K road race and fitness walk beginning at 10:30 am. The kid’s one-mile race starts at 10 am. The first 150 5K registrants get an event T-shirt.

Registration fees: $18 early birds, $20 after St Patrick’s Day (18 and under, 65 and older: $15.) Register on line at Major sponsors include Parker Carpets, MV Savings Bank, Ocean View Restaurant & Tavern.

Two on the winning side

Gillian O’Callaghan and Celia Mercier, a senior and junior at MVRHS, play in the South East Mass Girls’ Hockey League on a team composed of girls from Barnstable, Duxbury, Falmouth Marshfield, MVRHS, Scituate, Whitman-Hanson, Pembroke and Sandwich. They recently played against the North Division girls from Canton, Franklin, Dover-Sherborn, King Philip, Quincy, North Quincy, Westwood and Boston Latin.

The South team won, 4-1. Celia scored a goal and had an assist. Gillian also had an assist.
