Volleyball competition is served up

The interscholastic volleyball season got under way Tuesday at the Tisbury and West Tisbury gymnasiums.

At Tisbury the host Tigers swept the visiting Eagles of Edgartown, three games to none: 25-18, 25-12, 26-24.

Especially effective from the service line were Tisbury’s Mike Mussell and Megan Bishop Bischoff. Also earning more than their share of points were Carey McAndrews and Kaela Vecchia-Zeitz.

The Tisbury JVs also won their match, 2-1.

At West Tisbury the hometown team repelled the invaders from Oak Bluffs, winning the first game, coming from behind and posting the final five points with Lucy Hackney on the line, 25-22.

Game two was a cliffhanger featuring long volleys. The visiting Blazers needed an exra point to take the game, 26-24.

Games three and four finished in the West Tisbury win column. The final contest was the longest, with the Hawks forced to score 29 times before claiming. The winning two points were won with Julie Nevill serving.

Today West Tisbury is at Edgartown and Tisbury at Oak Bluffs. Next Tuesday OB is home to Edgartown and West Tisbury entertains Tisbury.
