Ned’s Netters

Ned Fennessy, in his 21st year as Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys tennis coach, sends a promising team onto the courts today at Cohasset and hosts Bishop Feehan here on Saturday.

It will be a challenge to match, much less improve on, last year’s record of 15-3, 8-0 in the EAC.

Reid Yennie will play first singles, Kent Leonard second, and freshman Patrick McCarthy third.

The opening match doubles teams will be Jackson McBride and Justice Yennie, Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer. The team numbers 17 players, largest ever, most of whom have been playing winter tennis under the bubble at Vineyard Youth Tennis.

Darts update

In the first week of darts competition at the P-A Club, on March 10, Robert O’Sullivan, Peter Searle, and Brenda Welsh won their match by beating Michael Lipinsky, Gus Leaf, and Lisa Mathieu, 7-4.

Jack Welch and Dana Resendes also won 7-4 against James Rowell and Linda Wood. A playoff ensued with O’Sullivan’s team winning the money.

In week two on March 17, Jack Welch, Dana Resendes, and Jeff Wray won the money by besting Wes Wood, Gus Leaf, and Lisa Mathieu, 7-4.

Week three competition on March 24 saw Robert O’Sullivan, Peter Searle, and Peter Hoffman tied withWes Wood, Rene Mathieu, and Linda Wood, both winning 7-4. In the playoff O’Sullivan’s team took home the money.

The team standings to date are:1. Robert O’Sullivan (20); 2. Jack Welch (18); 3. James Rowell (16); 4. Michael Lipinsky (12).

Youth Soccer sign-up

Boys and girls may register for the M.V. Youth Soccer Recreational League’s Minikickers and Under 8, Under 10 teams in the regional high school lobby Saturday, from 9 am to 12 Noon. Registration is also open online at mvsoccer.org.

The Youth Soccer League season begins the Saturday after Easter, April 30, at the West Tisbury school.

Late sign up for Babe Ruth softball

Tennis cleanup

Members of the M.V. Community Tennis Assn. spent a few hours cleaning up the high school tennis courts, Saturday, March 19, weeding, trimming, fixing windscreens, fences, and gates.

Participating MVCTA members included Scott Smith, Sarah Moore, John Cahill, Penny Franklin, Tony Omer, Barbara Leonard, and Lorne Lewis. Also helping with the cleanup were Carla Cooper from the Boosters Club and her husband Doug. Bret Leonard also helped at odd jobs.

The MVCTA is a USTA-sponsored community tennis organization. Future plans for the association include helping facilitate grants to improve the Island courts.
