The Martha’s Vineyard boys’ travel soccer teams are off to a good start. The under-6 and under-14 teams both scored victories last weekend in Norton and Falmouth.
The under-6 boys’ travel soccer team played at Falmouth in the season opener, Sunday.
Falmouth played a very tight defense, consistently breaking up MV runs. The Islanders had a wake-up call when Falmouth scored the game’s first goal.
The Islanders were second in the state last year and are not used to being behind.
MV opportunities to score bounced off posts or sailed over the net. Finally, Jacob Lawrence scored the evener on a breakaway and Rafael Oriques’ goal put the Vineyard ahead. MV goalie Ben Dwayne saved the narrow lead by diving to block a promising penalty shot. Jacob Lawrence gave the Vineyard a small cushion with a late shot. MV 3, Falmouth 1.
U-14 boys start well
The Under-14 boys’ travel soccer team won their game against a strong opponent, Norton, at Norton, Saturday, 4-2. The Islanders look to build on that performance, making some adjustments in preparation for their first home game of the season versus Fall River Saturday, at Veterans War Memorial Park. Kickoff is at 10:45 am.
