Plans to resume a driver’s education program at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) are in the works for next fall, superintendent of schools James Weiss informed the school committee in a meeting Monday night.

In a phone conversation with The Times on Tuesday, Mr. Weiss said he told the school committee that driver’s education was not offered this semester because the high school was unable to find a state-licensed instructor.

Mr. Weiss said there are funds in the high school’s budget for driver’s education next year and that MVRHS would issue a request for proposals in May for an instructor.

“We would like to provide the classroom portion to all sophomores who are 15 years or more, come September,” he said.

In the meantime, Mr. Weiss said, “There is one provider on the Island, Joe Thibodeau, and there are people from off-Island who also provide driver’s ed, who either come here or students go there, so there are other alternatives.”

In other business, Mr. Weiss presented two documents for school committee chairman Susan Mercier’s signature for legal agreements between the high school, the MV Sharks Baseball Team, and the Carminucci Sports Group (CSG). The MV Sharks are an amateur collegiate team that will compete in the brand-new four-team Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL), both formed by CSG.

Mr. Weiss said the agreements included all of the terms the school committee had asked for, such as equipment for the high school, a storage building, field maintenance, and student internships. June 10 is the first game.

This month’s “Student Spotlight” featured senior Amoy Anderson, who moved to Martha’s Vineyard from Jamaica about a year ago. In that short time, Ms. Anderson has been involved in many school activities and community service at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Mr. Weiss said.

In other news, Principal Stephen Nixon announced that an anti-bullying training session for parents by staff from the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center will take place at 6 pm, April 27, in the Performing Arts Center.
