Like looking in a kaleidoscope

Islander Valerie Sonnenthal, member of the Cleaveland House Poets and publisher of Errata Editions, presents a unique film in conjunction with Island Theatre Workshop this Friday, April 8. “Visual Diary Project” is Ms. Sonnenthal’s half-hour triptych animation film, reminiscent of a kaleidoscope using the Photo Booth feature and mirror effect on her computer, featuring original music by Sergio Cervetti. Richard Skidmore will also premiere a short film, and a question and answer session will follow with all the artists. The event is free; for more information, call Ms. Sonnenthal at 774-563-8282.

Food for fines

The Vineyard Haven Library will forgive tardiness when it comes to returning items if they are brought back to the library between April 10 and 16 with a non-perishable food donation for the Island Food Pantry. Call 508-696-4211 for more information.

For the kids

Singer Carly Simon has lent her voice to a children’s book coming out this month, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” ($17.95). This new spin on the classic American song by Jack Norworth features character Katie Casey, a cat, cheering for her team at Sluggers Stadium.

A three-song CD accompanies the book with Ms. Simon singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” “I Gave My Love a Cherry,” and “Scarborough Fair.”

Artist Amiko Hirao, whose colorful designs fill the pages, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, and lives in Boston.
