Martha’s Vineyard U-13 boys bow to Sandwich at lacrosse

The Sandwich under-13 boys’ youth lacrosse team earned the honors Sunday, at the Oak Bluffs school, 7-3.

Martha’s Vineyard scoring was by Jack Garrett, assisted by Henry Wallace, Donald O’Shaughnessy and Henry Wallace.

Jacob Gunderson was a last-minute substitute in goal for the Islanders and was commended for a “great game” by head coach, Bruce Mahaffey.

In travel soccer action, the U-14 boys’ travel soccer team defeated Norton at Norton Sunday, 4-2. Their first home game is Sunday, at 10:45 versus Fall River.

The U-11 boys played their first Division 1 game in the South Coast League, beating Westport, 4-1. Lohen Goodwin scored thrice. The Islanders’ fourth goal was by Gabriel Bellebuono. Jared Koster and Goalie Luka Vieira keyed the defense. Last Sunday the U-11s lost to a seasoned Dartmouth team 2-0, despite heroic work in goal by Vieira.

The U-16 boys’ travel soccer team opened its season at Falmouth, Sunday, April 3. The Clippers tight defense was effective breaking up Vineyard runs and stopping Martha’s Vineyard threats.

When Falmouth scored the game’s first goal, the Islanders were jolted into action. Having finiished second best in the state last year, these Islanders are not used to being behind.

Vineyard pressure increased, but shots hit the post or sailed over the crossbar. Finally Jacob Lawrence scored on a break away, tying the score. Rafael Oriques’ goal put the Islanders ahead to stay. Martha’s Vineyard goalie Ben Dwayne dove to stop a penalty shot heading for the corner. Lawrence’s second goal gave the Islanders breathing room and the final score, 3-1.

The U-16 boys hosted Oceana last Sunday, defeating the visitors from Orleans, 4-1. Kip Cooperrider opened the bidding, followed by Felix Reagan’s counter in heavy traffic and Evander Medici’s textbook volley. Martin Aranzabe, recently arrived from Uruguay, added the fourth Vineyard goal, Martin’s first in his new country

Oceana scored the game’s last goal on a penalty kick.

This Sunday the U-16s are home to Freetown, at 1:30 pm.

Girls Youth LaX teams win

The Under-15 girls’ lacrosse team defeated Dartmouth, Sunday, in their first home game, 6-5. Aubrey Ashmun scored four times . Leila Gardner and Shannon Morris also scored. Sam Hargy made six saves in the net.

The Under-13 girls won their first game of the season dropping Dartmouth, 10-2. Erin Hill, Audrey McCarron and Lacey Dinning each scored three goals. Kylie Hatt also scored. Kate Sudarsky had three saves in goal. Kylie Hatt had one.

Both teams are at Bourne, Sunday.
