Thieves target pills in more Edgartown housebreaks

Thieves broke into four houses in the Bold Meadow development off Edgartown-West Tisbury Road in Edgartown Monday. That makes 16 very similar break-ins in less than a month. Police ask for help from the public to catch the crooks.

“Two of these burglaries occurred while residents were at work during the day, and the other two were unoccupied homes,” police Chief Tony Bettencourt said in a statement. “Entry was made by breaking windows, and it appears the suspect(s) were acting fast and only looking through medications.”

The thieves took prescription narcotics from one of the houses. Nothing was taken from the other three, police said.

Over the past month, thieves entered houses in several parts of town, always targeting houses where people are away during the day. Police are investigating similar break-ins on Oakdale Drive, Planting Field Wood, Robinson Road, Mariner’s Way, and Edgartown Meadows. In each case, valuables were left untouched, and only prescription pills were taken.

“We are again asking anyone who sees anything or anyone suspicious to call the Edgartown Police Department,” chief Bettencourt said. “You can also email, text, or call the police department’s anonymous tip line at 774-310-1190.”
