Knolls Ward (left) and Joe Rogers bested the competition Sunday to win the Martha's Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trap championship.
Sunday, at the Martha's Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trap range in Edgartown, Knolls Ward of Vineyard Haven defended his title to win the club trap championship by breaking the most targets out of a total of 50.
Knolls Ward and William "Buzz" O'Brien were tied for first. In the resulting shoot-off Knolls claimed first place and Buzz second place. Joe Rogers of Oak Bluffs won in the non-member category.
Unlike skeet, where shooters aim at crossing clay targets from eight different angles, trap targets fly away from the shooter.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Wilson Kerr was a close second, and Matt Gamache finished third.
