Ladies, are you getting up a little early tomorrow? A great many of my friends are looking forward to seeing the fairy tale princess ride with her prince in a golden horse-drawn carriage. You can see this carriage ride at about 7:15 am on nearly every television channel. The wedding is at 6 am our time.

Then you can enjoy a light comedy film from France on Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Cornell Theatre. “Potiche” is a glossy throwback, an old-fashioned romantic fantasy starring Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu. A trophy housewife (or ‘potiche’) steps in to manage her wealthy husband’s umbrella factory after the workers go on strike and take him hostage. French with English subtitles. This is another delightful offering from the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society.

I am getting tired of all the April showers. They do bring the promise of dandelions for summer, but enough is enough.

Some gardeners were unhappy that the showers were not sufficient. Then there were the ones who had not quite gotten their gardens ready for a soaking yet. I prefer not to garden. I’d rather admire the stuff courageous enough to come back on its own. I do admire the hardy tulips pushing their pretty green leaves up through the brown oak leaves I haven’t cleared away yet.

In a raw foods cooking class at the library Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm, Stacy Stowers will demonstrate how to add more fresh raw foods into our diets. Her famous Happy Shake, which is made from lots of spinach, will be on the menu. Sign up online at vhlibrary.org or at the front desk.

Our library has chosen “Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food” as the Island Sustainability Book Club selection. The book, by Paul Greenberg, introduces information that was new to me. Several library programs are scheduled to provide better understanding of our oceans and of the threats to them. Tisbury Waterways will tell you more about the bio-swale or vegetative buffer, a natural way to filter storm water runoff to prevent pollution of marine environments. Learn how you can grow your own rain garden for the same results on Wednesday at 7 pm.

The natural end to our life is not a topic we choose to think much about. The First Congregational Church in West Tisbury has a program with interactive discussion, open to all, about end-of-life planning and choices. Planning for a Graceful Exit will be offered at the church on May 7 from 10 to 2. Not everyone may realize there are not only medical, legal, and financial issues, but also spiritual issues. There is also the question of how do you decide about the funeral. The cost of $10 covers the program and a light lunch. Reserve your spot with Meg at 508-693-2842.

You can welcome spring that Saturday afternoon, May 7, from 2 to 4 at Featherstone’s 2nd annual Garden Tea Party and Fashion Show. The tea party will benefit Featherstone programs. There will be prizes for your special hats. You will recognize the community celebrities who will walk the runway under the Summer Tent. For more, call 508-693-1850.
