You’ve got a friend

This Saturday night, May 7, the friends of Kevin Searle are hosting a fundraiser for him at the Portuguese-American Club. Mr. Searle, a resident of Edgartown who grew up on the Island, is battling cancer. Doors open at 6 pm, tickets are $20, and there will be silent auction items to bid on and a potluck supper. Organizers ask all to bring a dessert or side dish to share. A live auction starts at 8 pm with auctioneer Rick Mello, and dancing follows. If you are unable to attend and would like to donate, checks may be made out to You’ve Got a Friend, P.O. Box 1317, West Tisbury, MA. 02575.

Works in Progress

For several years, a group of Vineyard writers have been gathering every Sunday at Cleaveland House in West Tisbury. Presided over by mystery writer Cynthia Riggs, they share fiction and nonfiction that’s just been written, critique each other’s work, and generally egg each other on to greater literary heights.

On two consecutive Monday nights in May, the writers will read their works in progress, ranging from mystery to memoir, ghost story to biography.

The first writers to read, this Monday, May 9 at 7 pm, are Cynthia Riggs, Michael Ditchfield, Paul Magid, and Mary-Louise Rouff. The following Monday, May 16, hear from Elissa Lash, Shirley Mayhew, Paul Levine, and Susanna Sturgis. For more information, call 508-693-3366.
