Aren’t we enjoying a beautiful spring? Sunshine and warm breezes bring out many happy smiles. Brilliantly colored tulips decorate the edges of roadways and paths. The daffodils are nodding in yards and gardens. Deep pink cherry trees and tulip magnolias are lovely.

Everyone is talking about the fluffy white blossoms now bursting forth on the glorious Bradford pear trees, especially along Clough Lane. This is a vision, as the flowers branch out over our heads. Some treats are worth going out of your way to see. Someone told me that the parishioners at St. Augustine’s originally planted these trees. Does anyone know more about this?

I love the comments about the royal wedding. We were all happy to appreciate a few hours devoted to fun and romance and history. Even the news people seemed relieved to have pleasant topics to discuss. Feathered and flowered hats suddenly appeared in unusual places across the Island. Several women dressed up with hats and perhaps matching dresses to watch the televised event.

I could understand the grandparents wanting a closed carriage. Queen Elizabeth II is 85 and Prince Philip will be 90 in June. Next year is Diamond Jubilee: she will have reigned for 60 years.

Lobster rolls are back. Beginning tomorrow and continuing on Friday nights through the summer at Grace Episcopal Church from 4 to 7:30 pm, you can buy a fresh lobster roll served with chips and a drink. Hot dogs are available too. And if you like pie, you will have trouble making a choice. Enjoy an evening out or get take out. For more information or for large orders, call 508-693-0332.

Is your garden ready? Spring is here. The COMSOG Plant Sale from 9 am to 2 pm each day starts Saturday and runs until May 29. Get your organic herbs and veggies or heirloom tomatoes, all ready to plant. There are 15 varieties of peppers. You can buy Mom a hanging basket, too. COMSOG is on New York Avenue in Oak Bluffs.

Celebrating Mother’s Day has never been so easy. Kathryn Stewart invites you to take your Mom to tea on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm at the First Baptist Church. Who wouldn’t love a Musical May Tea? You can get your tickets at the door: $10 for adults, $5 for children.

Next Monday all are welcome to enjoy Tea & Talk at the Tisbury Senior Center at 2 pm. You will have a chance to meet Anna Lowell Tomlinson. She wrote and illustrated a delightful tale about Lucius, a Vineyard cat. The book is called “One of My Nine Lives,” and the proceeds benefit the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats.

Then on Tuesday at 1:30 pm, the Vintage Voices, made up of your neighbors and friends, will present a concert called Songs & Satire. Their repertoire usually features familiar tunes. All are welcome.

Do you remember the excitement and anticipation of prom night? If your child is going to the junior prom, you really should take advantage of the following offer: Parents of Martha’s Vineyard High School juniors are invited to get prom safety tips and a free dinner prepared by Tea Lane Caterers on Tuesday, May 10, from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Hebrew Center. The prom should be a wonderful experience, but parents should remind their children that alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes are not necessary for an evening of fun.

Congratulations to Craig and Laura Mayhew on their 9th anniversary. They celebrate on what they call “Cinco de Mayhew.”

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Evelyn Thomas who is celebrating her 94th birthday this year. (That is a lot of balloons.)

Heard on Main Street: Housework when done correctly can kill you. Mothers already know this.

Happy Mother’s Day.
