Vineyard Verses : Waiting for his mate

May 4, 2011

Martha's Vineyard Times File Photo

On a day when weather proved rather harsh,
this osprey returned to Oak Bluffs in mid-March.

He seems to scan the sky, far and near
from the nest-pole behind Windemere.

In spring, there is no specific date;
but he knows it's about time to expect his mate.

Bird-lovers must surely remember:
ospreys leave the Vineyard in September.

Meanwhile, he begins the "daddy" test
by adding twigs and sticks to the future nest.

When she returns from the south's far reaches,
they'll seek to propagate the species.
