Oak Bluffs roundabout - video simulation
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Highway Division this week provided The Times with video simulations of the proposed Oak Bluffs roundabout and the existing four-way stop, for comparison purposes.
The video simulations depict traffic flow through the intersection of Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at Airport and Barnes Roads. The simulations were part of a presentation during a design public hearing for a roundabout proposed for the intersection. MassDOT held the hearing on April 20 at the Oak Bluffs Library.
The models for both simulations are based on the same traffic loads, at volumes projected for year 2030, to demonstrate how the roundabout would process the traffic compared to the four-way stop, according to MassDOT project manager Thomas Currier.
John Diaz, vice president of GPI, the company awarded the design contract by DOT, created the simulations and emphasized at the hearing that they are very preliminary illustrations.
Mr. Currier agreed to provide the video simulations to The Times, with the permission of the public relations department.
